Things You Can Do to Make Your Home a Safe Haven

You see it every day in the news; a home invasion occurs or a home has been broken into.  The victims of these crimes probably thought it couldn’t happen to them.  The fact is that home burglary can happen to anyone at any time.

What can you do to protect your family and your home from becoming a statistic of these crimes?

If you’ve installed a security system, congratulations.  This is an excellent tool for ensuring your family’s safety.  Make sure your system has panic buttons to summon help even if the system is disarmed. Testing the system to ensure it is working properly, at least once a year, is a good practice as well. But what else can you do to make sure your home doesn’t become a target for criminals?  Installing a lighting system is another excellent tool against crime.  No burglar wants to break into a home that is lit up so he can be seen while entering your home.  The most effect lighting system might incorporate some spotlights that are on all the time as well as a few motion detection lights.

Do you have shrubs that are against your home’s foundation?  This is another area of concern.  Many criminals use these shrubs and plantings to hide behind.  Trim them down or get rid of them completely.  This eliminates that hiding place entirely.

Your front and back door are another place that may need some help becoming more secure.  Dead bolts offer a line of defense in a door lock.  The bolt actually goes into the door frame giving it a stronger anchor.  Strengthening the strike plate in the door frame with 3-4” screws and metal support can make a dead bolted very difficult, if not impossible, to get through.  Although they look nice, don’t get a door with glass panes.  These panes are easy to break and the burglar can then reach through and unlock the door.
